Chip Carving Patterns

You can start with either the easiest carving first or last. Try to find a work style that personally suits you and your chip carving pace. It will catch the chips flying all over the place and help you to clean up more easily afterward.

We have further assisted you in making sure that each chip carving pattern from this collection is presented as a segment already prepared for copying. We have not painted the patterns, so you will have to do it yourselves in some vector or 2D CAD software if you like. Chip carving wood decoration technique is very popular, and we hope that these 4 patterns will make a lot of its lovers happy. All the patterns offered here consist only of straight lines and circle segments.

The sample shown right is a finished carving from our Chip Carving Pattern package, available at Art Designs Studio. It is also available in our Chip Carving E-Project, a 37-page PDF file e-book and 110 chip carving chip variations and patterns.

The third row shows the first large motif area and uses both free-from long line work as well as large triangle chip cuts. The central rectangle area can be used for a name, date, special event, or for a small free-from pattern. The second row uses the classic triangle chip cut with small oval free-form chips worked from the 3×2 motifs into the un-carved background space.

Combining a simple rosette and the diamond patterns makes a new recognizable object – an Air Balloon. The carving may be left unpainted but if you decide to paint your chip carved balloon avoid too watery paint – it can bleed into the neighbor chips. The tree (fir) pattern combines 11 chips; one of them is four-corner (rectangular) chip for the trunk.

Just push down towards the bottom left corner of the square. The second position is simply facing the blade away from you and pushing the tip of your blade into the wood with your thumb on the back of the knife. You thumb is going to keep in contact with the wood surface and the knife at all times when carving. This allows for more control and reduces risk of ever cutting yourself. Chip carving patterns are available as usually in Autodesk (dwg), Encapsulated PostScript (eps) and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file formats.

Pus your knife in at and angle towards the middle of the triangle chip and push down towards the middle line. Then start to lift your knife out towards where the other cut ended, while still adding pressure. Put the tip of you blade into the first intersection of lines and press down coming towards you. You want to make sure that the blade of the knife is going in at about a 45° angle into the wood.

A chip carving knife is your best friend when digging in large chips. If you are having difficulty chip carving a particular pattern, then probably it is a little bit too complex. One way to get around this issue is to simplify the pattern. Try to remove unnecessary lines and mark the center point of every chip. Once you are done, go ahead and glue the pattern over your material again.

Join us for a one-day workshop learning the art of chip carving with artist Keunho Peter Park. Participants will receive two carving knives, and a wooden 4×6” photo frame to embellish with their chip carving pattern. This outstanding collection of 126 chip carving patterns will give you plenty of new and useful source material.

To touch it up and add some really nice detail, we’re going to make some small cuts into the wood squares between the triangles. Now flip your basswood over and your going to hold the knife in second position. A thin, small border line of triangle chips with stab knife accents fills row four.

The pattern must be printed with toner, such as that used in laser jet printers. Starting at a corner, lift off the pattern slowly, reheating areas that didn’t transfer sufficiently.

You can easily draw patterns using a T-Square and #2 size pencil directly on wood before carving. For this, you will need measuring tools like the Acme C Junior T-Square. It is transparent and allows you to view your drawing patterns under the instrument at all times. Emery cloth sandpaper is another easy to use sharpening tool, especially when performing relief carving.
